Position Summary

St Alban’s College, one of South Africa’s leading independent boys’ high schools, seeks to appoint a Director of Music. This senior leadership role oversees the strategic direction, administration, and artistic vision of the Music Department, ensuring excellence in both academic (IEB) and co-curricular music programmes.

The successful candidate will lead a vibrant department that fosters a lifelong passion for music, cultural enrichment, and artistic excellence across the College.


Key Responsibilities

1. Academic & Curriculum Leadership

  • Teach IEB Music from Grades 8–12 with creativity and expertise.

  • Lead curriculum development and integrate music technology, composition, and music history.

  • Promote Music as an engaging and high-achieving academic subject.

  • Use tools like Sibelius, Logic Pro, and other recording software effectively.

2. Ensemble & Performance Direction

  • Direct and conduct the College’s major ensembles (big band, orchestra, and choirs).

  • Oversee co-curricular programmes and student performances.

  • Manage music at College events such as Chapel services, Speech Day, and Carol Services.

  • Promote participation in Eisteddfods, festivals, and external examinations.

3. Departmental Management & Strategy

  • Lead and inspire the Music Department with clear goals and vision.

  • Manage a team of peripatetic music staff and departmental budgets.

  • Oversee the maintenance of instruments, facilities, and event logistics.

  • Plan and manage internal and external music events, including tours.

4. Community Engagement & Marketing

  • Drive music-related marketing and PR initiatives.

  • Develop community music projects and strengthen ties with parents, alumni, and media.

  • Encourage Old Boys’ involvement in music activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Music degree (or higher) and a professional teaching qualification.

  • SACE registration (essential).

  • Proven success in teaching the IEB Music Syllabus up to Grade 12.

  • Experience conducting and arranging for large ensembles (orchestra/big band).

  • Proficiency in music technology and Google Workspace.
