About the Position

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) seeks to appoint a skilled, experienced, and dynamic Researcher at the Animal Production (ARC-AP) division in Makhanda (Grahamstown).
This role focuses on transdisciplinary research in communal rangeland management, restoration, and governance, supporting sustainable land use and rural livelihoods in South Africa.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design, lead, and implement research projects in communal rangeland management and restoration.

  • Facilitate participatory action research and strengthen community engagement platforms.

  • Develop and manage projects integrating biophysical, socio-economic, and institutional components.

  • Source and secure national and international research funding opportunities.

  • Build and maintain strong research partnerships and collaborative networks.

  • Mentor and supervise postgraduate students (MSc/PhD) in relevant disciplines.

  • Manage research teams, monitor project progress, and compile detailed reports for stakeholders.

  • Conduct data analysis, interpretation, and provide evidence-based recommendations.

  • Publish peer-reviewed and semi-scientific articles in high-impact journals.

  • Participate in science-policy dialogues and local capacity development initiatives (workshops, demonstrations, advisory support).

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and ARC policies.


Minimum Requirements

  • PhD or MSc (with at least 3 years post-MSc experience) in one of the following fields:

    • Rangeland Ecology

    • Environmental Studies

    • Humanities / Sociology

    • Human Geography

  • Proven experience in transdisciplinary and social-ecological research.

  • Experience in community-based research and rangeland monitoring.

  • At least 2 scientific publications and ongoing research outputs.

  • Record of presenting at national/international conferences.

  • Experience in proposal writing, stakeholder coordination, and field-based research.

  • Proven track record of generating research funding and managing collaborations.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise MSc and/or PhD students.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Valid driver’s licence (Code 8 or 10).
