About the Role:

Unicorn Preparatory School is seeking an experienced Afrikaans First Additional Language (FAL) Teacher for the Intersen Phase (Grade 6 & 7). The position will be available from January 2026.

This is an exciting opportunity for an educator with a passion for teaching Afrikaans and the ability to manage classrooms effectively. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience teaching in the Intersen Phase and at least 3 years’ experience teaching Afrikaans (either HL or FAL). The role also involves participation in the school’s extracurricular program, including coaching seasonal sports.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Classroom Teaching: Teach Afrikaans FAL to Grade 6 & 7 learners with a focus on developing their language skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

  • Curriculum Planning & Implementation: Design and implement lesson plans that meet the learning needs of students in the Intersen Phase.

  • Extracurricular Engagement: Participate in and contribute to the school’s full extracurricular program, including sports and after-school activities, with an emphasis on team coaching.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Work collaboratively with colleagues, school leadership, and parents to ensure the best possible learning environment for students.

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with educational trends and improve teaching methods.


Requirements:

  • Teaching Qualification: B.Ed/PGCE in Intersen Phase Teaching.

  • Experience: At least 5 years of teaching experience at the Intersen Phase level, with 3+ years of teaching Afrikaans (FAL or HL) specifically.

  • Classroom Management: Strong classroom management skills and an understanding of child development at the Intersen Phase level.

  • Computer Literacy: Proficient in using technology in the classroom.

  • Extracurricular Commitment: Willingness to engage in extracurricular activities, including coaching sports and assisting with events outside regular school hours, including Saturdays.

  • Team Spirit: Commitment to working as part of an accomplished and dedicated team.

  • Personal & Professional Development: Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

  • Clear Criminal Record: Must be willing to provide a police clearance certificate (preferably have one already).

  • SACE Registration: Current SACE registration (certificate to be submitted with application).

  • English Environment: Willingness to work in an English-medium school environment.
