About the Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary:

The Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary honors the legacy of Ms. Sindiswa Nhlumayo, former Executive Head of the Centre for Maritime Excellence at SAMSA. This bursary aims to support Black female students pursuing maritime-related qualifications to build careers in the oceans economy.

It is available for undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students in various maritime disciplines.

Funded Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate: Marine Engineering, Aquaculture, Marine Science, Oceanography, Maritime Studies, Logistics, Zoology, etc.

  • Postgraduate (Honours/Diplomas): Marine and Environmental Law, Marine Ecology, Maritime Economics, Maritime Transport, Oceanography, etc.

  • Master’s: Maritime Studies, Marine and Ship Surveying, Ocean Governance, Maritime Management, etc.

  • PhD: Marine and Ship Surveying, Oceanography, Shipping Law, Maritime Law, etc.

What the Bursary Covers:

  • Full tuition fees

  • Textbooks

  • Subsidised accommodation and meal allowance

  • Participation in SAIMI-hosted conferences and local maritime events

  • Involvement in maritime and science bodies

Eligibility Criteria:

Undergraduate Students:

  • South African citizen

  • Female student

  • From a previously disadvantaged designated group (Black African, Coloured, or Indian)

  • Currently in Matric or have completed Matric

  • Studying or provisionally accepted for a full-time maritime-related undergraduate qualification at an accredited South African institution

  • Minimum 70% average (academic progress considered)

  • Parents’ income between R350,000 and R600,000 per year

Honours and Master’s Students:

  • South African citizen

  • Female student

  • From a previously disadvantaged designated group (Black African, Coloured, Indian)

  • Studying towards a maritime-related qualification at an accredited South African institution

  • Minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level, 65% at honours level

  • Parents’ income between R350,000 and R600,000 per year

PhD Students:

  • South African citizen

  • Female student

  • From a previously disadvantaged designated group (Black African, Coloured, Indian)

  • Studying towards a maritime-related qualification at an accredited South African institution

  • Minimum 70% average at Master’s level

  • Parents’ income between R350,000 and R600,000 per year
