Overview:
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is offering two full-time (40 hours/week) Laboratory Assistant Internship positions within the SAMRC Unit and the SARChI in Phytomedicine. This internship is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates in the Life Sciences to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory research environment, working alongside postgraduate students and researchers.
The interns will support research activities and lab operations, with a focus on cutting-edge techniques in phytomedicine. This is an exciting opportunity for those eager to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.
Internship Responsibilities:
As a Laboratory Assistant Intern, you will be responsible for:

Supporting Researchers and Postgraduates: Assist in experimental techniques and operate lab equipment.

Lab Inventory Management: Stock reagents, monitor equipment, and ensure the safe disposal of chemicals.

Laboratory Maintenance: Keep the laboratory tidy and comply with safety protocols.

Administrative Tasks: Handle purchase orders, follow-up on technical services, and assist with scheduling equipment maintenance.

Data Logging and Storage: Log and store plant materials, maintain records, and assist with administrative tasks as assigned by the Senior Analysts or Research Chair.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:

Postgraduate Diploma or Honours Degree (NQF Level 8) in Life Science, Health Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Molecular Biology.

A Master’s degree will be considered an added advantage.

Prior experience with chromatography, mass spectrometry, and extraction techniques is beneficial.
Required Skills:

At least 1 year of laboratory experience.

Knowledge of chemical substances and health & safety protocols.

Technical competence in operating specialized lab equipment.

Ability to multitask and work in a collaborative environment.

Strong organizational and teamwork skills.

Proficient in English (both written and spoken).

Computer literacy and communication skills are essential.
