Purpose of the Role:

To maintain and improve plant and production equipment through preventative and breakdown maintenance, installation, and mentorship of apprentices, while ensuring compliance with AECI’s standards and safety protocols.


Key Responsibilities:

🔧 General Functions:

  • Perform day-to-day breakdown maintenance and ensure equipment is running optimally.

  • Execute preventative maintenance plans for long-term equipment reliability.

  • Identify and manage critical spares, tools, and consumables.

  • Participate in risk assessments and SHEQ initiatives.

  • Issue maintenance clearance certificates after completed work.

🛠️ Installations & Fabrication:

  • Install mechanical process equipment (e.g. pumps, agitators, piping).

  • Fabricate steel and piping using ARC, TIG, and Argon welding methods.

  • Perform pipe fitting, alignment, and troubleshooting.

🔍 Maintenance Execution:

  • Maintain accurate job cards and maintenance records.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical/electrical equipment including agitators, pumps, effluent systems, and forklifts.

  • Occasionally assist in new project installations.

  • Adhere strictly to OHS Act and internal safety policies.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 + NQF Level 3 or higher post-matric qualification.

  • Red Seal Mechanical Fitter Trade Test (essential).

  • Welding certificate (advantageous).


Experience Required:

  • 3–5 years’ experience as a Fitter in:

    • Production / Workshop / Mechanical / Plant / Maintenance

    • Chemical industry exposure advantageous.


Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Skilled in ARC, Argon, and TIG welding.

  • Strong pump alignment and mechanical fitting skills.

  • Knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.

  • Proficient with MS Office (Word/Excel).

  • Able to mentor apprentices effectively.

  • Understands engineering principles, OHS Act, and MerSETA requirements.
