Role Overview
The Director of Rugby will be the custodian of the Bishops legacy, advancing systems and performance levels to meet modern demands. The role includes leading a culture of excellence, developing talent, and inspiring the next generation of Bishops rugby players.
This position works alongside the Teacher in Charge of Rugby, reporting to the Deputy Head of Sport and the Principal.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Planning

Lead the vision, strategy, and implementation of “The Bishops Way”.

Promote excellence, resilience, and integrity in line with the school ethos.

Design and implement a 3-year rugby development and performance plan.
Rugby Operations & Program Delivery
-
Oversee rugby curriculum and technical programs from U8–U19.

Mentor and develop coaches through a structured “coach the coaches” model.

Standardize skills development and coaching methodologies.

Embed The Bishops Way Game Model across all teams.

Strengthen conditioning and medical support systems via SPW (Sport Performance & Wellness).
Talent Identification & Recruitment

Lead strategic recruitment in collaboration with leadership and the Rugby Committee.

Secure talented players, focusing on transformation and positional needs.

Align recruitment with bursary structures and the Bishops Rugby Development Fund (BRDF).

Manage recruitment and development of coaches and managers.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting

Monitor player, coach, and team progress across all levels.

Provide performance updates and strategic reports to committees.
Stakeholder Engagement

Build strong relationships with students, parents, alumni, sponsors, and community.

Represent Bishops rugby at fixtures, tournaments, and events.
Minimum Requirements
-
Provincial or national-level playing/coaching experience.

Experience managing or developing elite schoolboy/U20 rugby talent.

Proven experience in high-performance rugby (school, university, or professional).

Accredited coaching qualification (World Rugby Level 2 minimum preferred).

Success in long-term talent development and recruitment.

Excellent leadership, communication, and administrative skills.

Understanding of independent school culture and expectations.

Alignment with Bishops’ values and educational philosophy.
