Role Overview

The Safety Officer is a legal appointment in terms of regulation 2.17.1 of the Minerals Act. This role focuses on ensuring safe operations underground through compliance, reporting, and proactive safety management.

Department: SHE (D1 Level)
Reports to: Chief Safety Officer

Key Responsibilities

Collect and analyse safety data
Conduct statutory inspections (30, 25, 90 days)
Stop unsafe work and facilitate accident investigations
Compile safety reports and verify compliance with safety systems
Contribute to short-range Operational Unit planning

Minimum Qualifications

Grade 12 or N3 equivalent
Blasting Certificate for metalliferous operations or relevant Trade Test
Courses in ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 Safety Management Systems
SHEP Safety training (advantageous)
COMSOC I & II or equivalent, SAMTRAC & OSHAS 18 001
ITIS / Train-the-Trainer certification
Auditor’s courses for Safety & Risk Control Management
Risk Assessment Techniques (SWIFT, HAZOP, FMECA)
Intermediate Fire & First Aid certificates

Experience & Skills

3 years’ experience as a Safety Officer or Acting Safety Officer in Underground Mining (mechanized & conventional)
Computer literacy (MS Office, MS Projects)
Knowledge of Accident Investigation methods (ICAM / RCAT / SCAT)
