Michaelhouse, founded in 1896 and set in the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, is a leading Anglican Independent senior Boarding School for boys from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The school is seeking a compassionate, qualified, and experienced Registered Nurse to join its team of healthcare professionals and provide health care and support to the students.

The successful candidate will be part of the Michaelhouse Sanatorium (San), providing high-quality nursing care to boarders and first aid care to the school community. The San is staffed 24/7 by nursing staff, and as a key member of the dynamic team, the San Sister will play a crucial role in offering primary healthcare, managing chronic conditions, and supporting students through injury care, referrals, and preventative health measures in a professional and caring environment.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse

  • A Primary Health Care, Occupational Health Care, or Nursing Degree is advantageous

  • A Dispensing Licence (or a Dispensing Course Certificate) that can be registered with the Michaelhouse Sanatorium

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience, ideally in adolescent or school-based care

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment

  • Strong clinical skills, including experience in trauma, chronic disease management, and preventive care

  • Excellent communication, organisational, and record-keeping skills

  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, and experience with ADAM or similar school management systems is beneficial)

  • A caring, compassionate, and student-centred approach

Key Duties:

  • Delivering high-quality primary healthcare services

  • Providing first aid and emergency care, particularly during sporting events

  • Managing referrals, follow-ups, and coordination with specialists and general practitioners

  • Supervising in-patient care and administering treatment for chronic and acute conditions

  • Ensuring accurate medical record-keeping and supporting medication compliance

  • Coordinating health education and preventive initiatives such as vaccinations and concussion management

  • Supporting the Senior Sister in administrative duties and strategic health planning

Important Conditions:

  • This position would be ideal for someone already residing within reasonable travel distance of Michaelhouse.

  • A small flatlet is provided for the San Sister when on duty.

  • Rotational shift work, including weekends and occasional duties during school events or festivals during school holidays, is required.
