About the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme 2026

The Funza Lushaka Bursary is one of South Africa’s most prestigious teaching bursaries aimed at promoting teaching as a profession among young South Africans.

It provides comprehensive funding for students pursuing Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications at any of the 26 public universities across the country.

The programme helps address the national shortage of qualified teachers in key subjects and empowers youth through access to quality education.


Qualifications Covered

1. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) – 4 years
Specialisations in:

  • Foundation Phase (Grade R–3)

  • Intermediate Phase (Grade 4–6)

  • Senior & FET Phase (Grade 7–12)

2. Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – 1 year
Available for Senior & FET Phase (Grades 7–12).
Applicants must already hold an appropriate undergraduate qualification with at least two priority subject areas.


Expenses Covered

The Funza Lushaka Bursary is fully funded, covering:

  • Tuition fees

  • Accommodation (including meals)

  • Books and learning materials

  • Registration and examination fees

  • Monthly living allowance


Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens aged 30 or younger

  • Demonstrate strong academic ability

  • Have been accepted into an approved B.Ed. or PGCE programme

  • Specialise in at least two priority subjects

  • Meet minimum academic requirements of the institution

How to Apply

Follow these steps to apply online:

  1. Visit www.eservices.gov.za

  2. Register with your personal details

  3. Log in with your username and password

  4. Select “Education” under the e-Services menu

  5. Click “Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme”

  6. Enter the OTP sent to you

  7. Accept the Terms and Conditions

  8. Click on the 2026 Application button

  9. Complete all required fields

  10. Accept the declaration to confirm your details


Important Notes

  • The bursary is renewable annually based on academic performance.

  • Recipients must teach in a public school for the same number of years they received funding.

  • Late applications will not be considered.
