About the Position

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) seeks a Senior Research Technician to join its Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) division at Roodeplaat, Pretoria.
This role focuses on farmer support, commercialisation, and enterprise development, contributing to agricultural innovation and sustainable agribusiness growth through applied research and technology transfer.


Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management & Coordination

  • Conceptualize, design, and initiate technical research projects.
  • Lead all aspects of project management, including:
    • Planning & initiation
    • Human resource allocation
    • Financial management
    • Risk assessment and mitigation

2. Research Support, Diagnostics, and Services

  • Implement and manage technical research projects.
  • Drive innovation and ensure effective adoption, translation, and commercialization of research outputs.
  • Provide oversight on project delivery to align with institutional goals.

3. Technology Transfer

  • Implement and manage technology transfer initiatives including:
    • Intellectual property (IP) assessment
    • Prototype development, testing, and validation
    • Building strategic technology partnerships

4. Scientific Research & Innovation

  • Support innovation, impact measurement, and commercialization of ARC technologies.
  • Ensure scientific integrity and measurable outcomes in all research programmes.

5. Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE)

  • Ensure compliance with OHS and environmental regulations.
  • Oversee laboratory and field safety procedures.
  • Manage hazardous material disposal responsibly.

6. Human Capital Development

  • Mentor and develop project staff and interns.
  • Drive capacity-building initiatives aligned with ARC’s human capital strategy.
  • Commit to continuous professional growth.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

  • MTech degree (or equivalent NQF7) with 2 years applicable experience, OR
  • B degree / B Hons / BTech / National Higher Diploma (NQF6) with 6 years applicable experience, OR
  • National Diploma (3 years) (NQF5) with 8 years applicable experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Registration with a relevant scientific or professional body will be an advantage.
  • Valid driver’s license (essential).
