Job Description:

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join their Finance Operations Division at the Westville campus. This role involves managing financial operations at the support services level and ensuring the provision of accurate, timely financial information to support decision-making.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparing capex reports for year-end preparations and commitments.

  • Providing supporting documentation for both internal and external audits.

  • Ensuring compliance with university policies, procedures, and legislation while processing financial transactions.

You will be integral in reconciling financial reports, managing cash flows, balance sheets, income statements, and providing detailed financial analyses. The role also includes regular interaction with financial stakeholders to maintain effective budgeting and finance operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and timely financial reports to support decision-making.

  • Assist in year-end preparations and commitments.

  • Prepare audit documentation for both internal and external auditors.

  • Reconcile and interpret cost reports, balance sheets, income statements, and other financial documents.

  • Ensure compliance with budget management and financial reporting regulations.

  • Formulate financial reports as per university requirements.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Three-year Diploma/Degree majoring in Accounting.

  • Three years’ relevant experience in an accounting environment.

  • Experience in reconciling and interpreting cost reports, balance sheets, and income statements.

  • A solid understanding of legislative and regulatory compliance for budget management and structured finance.

  • Proficient in general accounting principles.

  • Advanced computer literacy, including MS Excel and MS Word.


Preferable Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of the University’s policies and procedures.

  • Completed SAICA articles.

  • Experience with the ITS software package.

  • Experience working in a higher education institution.

  • Familiarity with committee structures and regulatory bodies within the University setting.
