Job Purpose:

The Assistant Information Specialist will support the development and management of collections of recorded materials and the delivery of information services to users. This includes managing various library collections such as books, journals, e-books, e-journals, and databases. The role also involves supporting research for students and promoting intellectual integrity and ethical scholarship.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Library Management & Support:

  • Circulation Desk Operations: Assist with issuing, renewing, and returning book loans.

  • Daily Management: Handle newspapers, including scanning and clipping, and manage journals.

  • Shelving & Shelf Reading: Ensure books and materials are shelved properly and maintained.

  • Equipment Monitoring: Ensure all library equipment (computers, printers, copiers) is functional.

  • Notice Boards & Displays: Assist in updating notice boards and preparing Information Centre displays.

Student Support & Workshops:

  • Student Assistance: Assist students with using computers and help with OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) searches.

  • Information Literacy Workshops: Conduct workshops to help students with information literacy and research skills.

  • Clerical Support: Provide administrative support to the Information Specialist, including photocopying, preparing handouts, and assisting with subject guides and database worksheets.

General Operations:

  • Professional Environment: Maintain a neat, organized, and professional Information Centre.

  • Ad-hoc Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Information Specialist.


Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year working experience in a relevant field, preferably in an academic Information Centre.

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.

  • Problem-solving abilities and a wide general knowledge base.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to handle tasks under pressure.

  • Commitment to customer service and an ability to work effectively with students and staff.

  • Proficient in analytical thinking and report writing.

  • Ability to work outside normal office hours, as required.
