Job Description
The Shift Chemist will be responsible for analyzing samples accurately, productively, and within the required timeframes. The role involves supporting the Head of Department in ensuring compliance with the SGS Laboratory Quality Manual, as well as Health and Safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical
-
Analyze analytical samples using correct procedures and methods.

Ensure technical accuracy of results and take remedial action when necessary.

Record, evaluate, and report analytical results, including interpretations.

Verify and maintain instruments and equipment.
-
Identify QC issues early and communicate with the Section Manager.
-
Diagnose suspect results and assist in problem-solving.
Administration
-
Calculate and report test results in standard formats.
-
Ensure timely reporting of results.
-
Maintain traceable records of all analytical data.
-
Dispose of samples according to procedures.
-
Re-analyze samples when control results fall outside acceptable limits.
General
-
Assist with gas cylinder changes.
-
Ensure laboratory cleanliness and compliance with safety requirements.

Be willing to work shifts and overtime when necessary.

Assist in training new staff.
-
Perform other tasks as assigned by the line manager.
Supervising
-
Support staff training on new methods and procedures.
-
Manage shift attendance, leave planning, and timekeeping.

Ensure adequate staffing per shift.
Production
-
Minimize overtime through proactive planning.
-
Ensure sufficient staff are available for each shift.
Qualifications
Education:
-
Minimum BSc or N Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
Experience:
-
On-the-job and formal training provided.
-
At least 2 years laboratory experience with a Diploma, or 5 years with equivalent lab experience (preferably in testing).

Proficiency in LIMS, Word, and Excel.

Strong knowledge of AAS and LECO operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
