St Alban’s College, one of South Africa’s leading independent boys’ high schools, seeks to employ a Director of Music. The position is an opportunity for a highly experienced, talented, and creative teacher who will foster enthusiasm for music and maintain a high standard of achievement.

Reports To: Director of Arts

The Director of Music is a senior leadership position responsible for the strategic direction, administration, and artistic vision of the Music Department. The incumbent provides comprehensive oversight of both the academic (IEB) and co-curricular music programs, ensuring excellence in teaching, performance, and student development.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Academic & Curriculum Leadership:

    • Teach Subject Music to students from Grade 8 to Grade 12, delivering the IEB Music Syllabus with expertise and creativity.

    • Lead curriculum development to ensure the program is engaging, relevant, and maintains the highest educational standards.

    • Champion Music as a valuable academic choice, inspiring student participation and achievement.

    • Integrate music technology, composition, and music history into the curriculum using tools like Sibelius, Logic Pro, and recording software.

  2. Ensemble & Performance Direction:

    • Direct and conduct the College’s major ensembles, including the big band and orchestra.

    • Arrange multi-genre music tailored to the specific strengths of student ensembles.

    • Oversee the co-curricular music program, ensuring a variety of performance opportunities.

    • Manage the department’s presence at key school functions (e.g., Chapel services, Speech Day, Carol Services).

    • Promote student participation in external exams, Eisteddfods, and festivals.

  3. Departmental Management & Strategy:

    • Lead the Music Department with a clear strategic vision and collaborate with staff on departmental goals.

    • Manage a team of peripatetic music staff and chair regular departmental meetings.

    • Develop and manage the departmental budget in consultation with the CFO.

    • Oversee logistics, including venue and equipment management in coordination with the Operations Director.

    • Lead the planning and management of internal and external music events, including festivals and tours.

  4. Community Engagement and Marketing:

    • Drive marketing and PR initiatives for the department, ensuring effective publicity of events.

    • Develop community music projects to enhance the transformative power of school music.

    • Foster participation from parents, Old Boys, and the wider community in music activities.

    • Liaise with the Old Boy Liaison Officer to involve alumni in music functions.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Music Degree (or higher) and a recognised professional Teaching Qualification.

  • Current registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

  • Extensive experience teaching the IEB Music Syllabus up to Grade 12.

  • Proven success in conducting and arranging for large ensembles (orchestra/big band).

  • Proficiency in music technology software and computer literacy (Google Workspace knowledge is advantageous).
