Position Overview:

Herschel Girls School is seeking a dynamic and experienced Estate Manager to join their team starting in January 2026. This is a full-time, hands-on role responsible for the overall maintenance, presentation, and operations of the Herschel Estate, including sports fields, landscaped grounds, buildings, and residential facilities. The Estate Manager will work directly under the Operations Manager, playing a key role in maintaining the estate to the highest standards of excellence.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Budget Management: Plan, monitor, and control the maintenance budget to ensure expenditure remains within approved parameters.

  • Operational Oversight: Develop and implement plans to meet objectives for estate maintenance and facilities management.

  • Staff Management: Supervise and manage estate staff, ensuring performance meets set objectives.

  • Health & Safety: Oversee Health & Safety measures across the estate and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

  • Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain strong partnerships with school leadership, staff, parents, and the wider community.

  • General Management & Administration: Perform general management and administrative duties as required to support the smooth functioning of the estate.

  • Transformation & Equity: Fully commit to the school’s transformation, equity, and belonging objectives, ensuring a safe and equitable environment for all.

  • Support the Christian Anglican Ethos: Be supportive of and uphold the Christian Anglican ethos of the school.


Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum Grade 12 qualification.

  • Additional relevant tertiary qualifications in operations and facilities management.

  • A qualification in horticulture will be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of conservation practices, property law, financial management, and community governance.

  • Expertise in sports facilities and grounds management.

  • Extensive experience in people management, performance management, and team leadership.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of IR/labour relations and Health & Safety legislation.

  • Proficient in IT, administration, project management, and problem-solving.

  • Financial acumen and strong organizational skills.

  • Customer service orientation with a focus on delivering results.

  • Physical fitness due to the demanding nature of the role and the size of the estate.

  • Fluent in English; proficiency in isiXhosa is preferred.
