Job Summary

Water quality monitoring and hydrological modelling within the Vaal Dam and Vaal Barrage catchment areas to ensure protection of raw water quality.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Water Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related field (Honours or Master’s degree advantageous).

  • Valid South African driver’s license (Code B) – field travel may be required.

  • Willingness to work in remote areas and conduct fieldwork under varying weather conditions.

  • Good report writing and communication skills in English (other South African languages advantageous).

  • Familiarity with GIS applications (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS).


Primary Duties

  • Conduct fieldwork for surface and/or groundwater quality sampling in catchment areas.

  • Monitor water quality parameters using manual and automated methods.

  • Assist in the setup, calibration, and validation of hydrological and water quality models.

  • Collect, clean, analyse, and interpret hydrological and water quality data using GIS and statistical tools.

  • Conduct catchment delineation and land use impact assessments.

  • Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and stakeholder meetings.

  • Identify pollution sources and assess water quality trends.

  • Stay updated with national legislation (e.g., NWA, NEMA), DWS water quality standards, and relevant modelling frameworks.


Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of hydrological processes and catchment dynamics.

  • Exposure to hydrological and/or water quality modelling software.

  • Competency in data analysis using Excel.

  • Knowledge of South African water legislation and catchment management frameworks.
