Position Overview:
Somerset College is seeking a highly motivated, performance-driven, and experienced Head of Athletics to lead their athletics programme for the 2026 school year. The ideal candidate will be a passionate, creative, and process-oriented individual with extensive experience in coaching and athletics programme management. This contract position offers the opportunity to design and implement a comprehensive sports curriculum, coach teams, mentor staff, and work with students to foster their athletic growth and development.
Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum & Programme Design: Develop and continuously update the school’s athletics curriculum, integrating technical skills, tactical understanding, physical conditioning, and psychological resilience for all age groups and skill levels.

Seasonal Planning: Design seasonal training cycles, event schedules, and progression benchmarks to ensure comprehensive development throughout the year.

Coaching Staff Management: Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate coaching staff to ensure alignment with the school’s philosophy and high coaching standards. Conduct regular coach development workshops to promote collaboration.

Athlete Development: Implement individualised athlete development plans focused on skill advancement, fitness, nutrition, and mental wellbeing. Work with medical staff to monitor injuries and recovery.

Team Selection & Communication: Lead transparent, merit-based team selection processes. Communicate player progress, expectations, and team updates to parents and guardians.

Data Analysis & Reporting: Collect, analyse, and report on athlete statistics, event outcomes, and training effectiveness. Prepare seasonal and annual reports for the Director of Sport, outlining achievements, challenges, and goals.

Student & Staff Motivation: Inspire students and staff to achieve their full potential, ensuring a balanced approach to academics, culture, and sport.
Minimum Requirements:

Proven experience in athletics coaching and programme management, ideally within a school or academy setting.

Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

A valid Police Clearance (not older than 3 months) and compliance with child protection policies.

Familiarity with injury prevention protocols, recovery practices, and return-to-play procedures.

A recognised coaching qualification (ASA Coaching Level 1 or above) is advantageous.
