Job Overview

Manage deli department resources to maximize turnover and minimize shortages. Ensure standards, processes, and policies are adhered to while supervising staff, merchandising, hygiene, and customer service.


Key Responsibilities

Merchandising Management:

  • Conduct regular quality checks on merchandise

  • Execute plano guide 100% and handle products as per SOP

  • Ensure department is ready for trade by store opening time

  • Identify fast-selling lines and implications on margin and sales

  • Ensure produce is wrapped and packed according to standards

  • Maintain sufficient product for customer demand

  • Comply with hygiene, housekeeping, and safe working standards

  • Implement promotional activities according to calendar

  • Keep back-up areas clean and organized

  • Rotate stock and monitor sell-by dates

  • Maintain department merchandising and cleanliness throughout the day

Food Safety & Hygiene:

  • Maintain hygiene and housekeeping standards

  • Implement stock rotation

  • Monitor food safety and health & safety compliance

  • Manage non-conformances through corrective action

  • Implement cleaning schedules and monitor sanitation

  • Record Food Safety Daily Checklist

Customer Services Management:

  • Respond to customer requests and queries

  • Assist with out-of-stock replacements and explain delivery schedules

  • Ensure department standards and equipment are maintained

Staff Management:

  • Communicate critical information to staff

  • Set targets, delegate, and follow up on activities

  • Handle procedural, policy, and legislative non-compliance

  • Attend regional meetings and relay information to staff

  • Check and amend staff scheduling (Kronos)

  • Coach staff on performance and standards

Administration:

  • Maintain equipment and general departmental standards

  • Monitor waste and turnover, identifying improvement opportunities

  • Ensure all SEL in place and current for customers

Systems:

  • Gap scan for out-of-stock items

  • Count and record out-of-stocks & over-stocks

  • Draw reports from SAP and communicate stock concerns

  • Process IDTs and actions on SAP as per SOP

  • Monitor electronic communications regularly

  • Process waste and ensure PIDs are counted correctly per National P&L schedule


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12

  • Experience/training in Foods Retail and resource management
