🎯 Job Purpose
Provide Occupational, Primary Health Care, and Emergency Medical Services to all SAAT technical employees and contractors, ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and other relevant legislation. Manage occupational health programs, maintain regulatory compliance, and monitor resource allocation within the department’s operational and capital budget. Serve as the subject matter expert within the Medical, Health, Safety & Environment department.
⚙️ Key Responsibilities
Occupational Health & Medical Services:

Conduct pre-employment, periodical, transfer, and exit medical examinations

Identify workplace health risks and implement preventative measures
-
Administer vaccines and prophylactic treatments; provide pre-travel health counseling
-
Inspect facilities and food areas for compliance with hygiene and safety standards
Emergency Medical Services:
-
Provide immediate emergency care to employees and contractors
-
Ensure emergency equipment and consumables are available and functional
-
Process referrals to medical institutions and complete relevant documentation
Primary Health Care Services:

Assess, diagnose, and prescribe treatment for occupational-related conditions

Refer complex cases to Occupational Medical Practitioner (OMP) or external clinics
-
Manage ill-health and sick absenteeism reporting and mitigation recommendations

Oversee drug control program in compliance with Medicine Control Act
Administration & Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of medical surveillance, injuries, and laboratory tests

Update employee files and drug registers
-
Participate in SH&E committees and provide expert guidance on compliance and improvement

Monitor contractor compliance with SAAT’s SH&E management system
Incident Analysis & Risk Management:

Conduct medical investigations, root-cause analysis, and identify contributing factors

Recommend and monitor corrective and preventive measures for continuous improvement
🧠 Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications:
-
Matric / Grade 12
-
National Diploma / Bachelor’s Degree / Honours in Occupational Health or Nursing
-
Occupational Health Certificate with 3 years’ experience OR Occupational Health Diploma with 2 years’ experience

Registration with SA Nursing Council
Experience:
-
4 years as a professional nurse (post-training)
-
2 years in occupational health nursing within engineering or chemical industries
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
