About the Role

Thomas More College is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and motivated School Counsellor to provide support to pupils in the Junior and Senior Primary phases. The successful candidate will contribute to the holistic well-being of pupils in line with the school’s Christian ethos and the IEB curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counselling using age-appropriate, developmental methods.

  • Deliver preventative and early intervention programmes to build resilience and social-emotional skills.

  • Undertake developmental screening and coordinate referrals for psycho-educational assessments.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential case notes (aligned with HPCSA, POPIA, and the Children’s Act).

  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external professionals to create learner support plans.

  • Facilitate parent and staff workshops on topics such as behaviour management, wellbeing, and learning differences.

  • Assist in crisis response and critical incident management.

  • Support school-wide wellness and pastoral initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Psychology or a Master’s in Social Work.

  • Professional registration with HPCSA (compulsory).

  • At least 5 years’ experience working with children in schools or child-focused environments.

  • Experience in IEB curriculum schools and concessions/accommodations (advantageous).

  • Knowledge of child protection legislation and safeguarding best practices.

  • High levels of empathy, patience, professionalism, and a child-centred approach.

  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team (e.g. remedial therapists, OTs).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Competence in case management systems and computer literacy.

  • Criminal and Sexual Offender’s Clearance Certificate.

  • Commitment to the Christian ethos and school code of conduct.
