Position Overview:
The American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) is seeking a dedicated School Nurse (Fixed-Term) to provide preventive health services and support the health, growth, and development of students. The ideal candidate will be responsible for promoting the optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of students, identifying health-related challenges, and offering services such as health education, referrals, and care.
The role will require the ability to assess, monitor, and follow up on students’ health conditions and provide emergency nursing management when needed. This is a full-time, campus-based position reporting to the Operations Director.
Qualifications and Experience:

Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent.

Nursing Diploma or Degree.

Registered Nurse with SANC.

First Aid/CPR certification required.

Minimum of 5 years’ nursing experience.

Experience working in a school or academic institution is an advantage.

Knowledge of child protection laws and practices.

Broad-based nursing competency, including school nursing, public health education, and epidemiology.

Experience in occupational health and pediatrics or other relevant fields.

International experience with cultural sensitivity is a plus.

Strong communication skills across all levels (students, parents, staff).
Duties and Responsibilities:

Health Assessments and Care: Provide health assessments, analyze health histories, and evaluate findings related to vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and development.

Health Counseling and Education: Offer ongoing health counseling, health education, and guidance on lifestyle decisions affecting student health.

Health Monitoring: Develop and implement student health plans, monitor health data, and identify any issues that need follow-up or intervention.

Emergency Care and First Aid: Provide first aid for sick or injured students or staff and assist with emergency nursing management for injuries or illnesses.

Health Education: Educate students and families on health topics such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse.

Preventive Services: Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases, and ensure students receive required immunizations.

School Health Policy: Participate in the development of health policies, goals, and objectives for the school’s health services.

Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between the school, parents, and community health resources.

Record-Keeping: Maintain health records, track immunization records, and ensure compliance with all health-related documentation.

Other Duties: Order and maintain health office supplies, communicate with teachers and school staff about students’ health conditions, and report safety hazards.

This is a 45-hour per week position, with the possibility of extended hours based on school needs.
